Wild Brothers Racing Hits 278.6 MPH at the Texas Mile
How fast can you go in a standing mile? Well if your name is Bill Warner, you can reach 278.6 MPH from a standing stop in a mile’s distance, and then slowdown in another half-mile of run-off. Helping Warnerachieve that impressive feat is a turbocharged 1299cc Suzuki Hayabusa that makes 650hp, which Warner methodically turned the screws on until he beat the previous record at the Texas Mile of 261.5 MPH. A tropical fish farmer ...

Juan Pablo Montoya Wins Talladega Pole
Filed under: Casey Mears, Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dave Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Jimmie Johnson, Joe Nemechek, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Chase for the Sprint Cup, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
Juan Pablo Montoya has captured the pole position for Sunday's AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega Superspeedway with a lap of 184.640 miles per hour.It was Montoya's third pole of the year. He also won the top starting spots at New Hampshire and Indianapolis in July.
"We always run really good here," Montoya said afterwards. "We always have good race cars. Right now, (we'll) get ourselves a good pit stall for the race and then see what happens. We'll be ok. Talladega is more about how the car is going to be in the draft and everything. We came with the same thing we had here in the spring, we ran really well. Both (Earnhardt Ganassi) cars ran really well."
Clint Bowyer won the second starting spot with a lap of 184.498 mph. Kurt Busch was third, followed by the unlikely Joe Nemechek and Jeff Gordon.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified sixth, followed by some other lesser-ranked drivers, including Dave Blaney in seventh, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and Sam Hornish Jr.

2010 Estoril MotoGP FP2 Result - Lorenzo Leads Under A Clearing Sky
With skies clearing and the weather surprising everyone by improving radically, the MotoGP riders finally got a chance to put in some serious laps at Estoril in the second session of free practice. The session started out in a light rain and on a sodden track, and Casey Stoner sped to the top of the timesheets, firmly in control for much of practice. But as the sun came out and something approaching a dry line appeared, others started to make inroads on Stoner's position.
At the end of practice, it was Fiat Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo who set the quickest time, ending FP2 just over a tenth ahead of Stoner's Marlboro Ducati teammate Nicky Hayden. Hayden split the Fiat Yamaha teammates, Valentino Rossi over a third of a second behind Lorenzo in 3rd, while Rossi was himself the filling in a Marlboro Ducati sandwich, with Casey Stoner ending up 4th.
Behind the front four loomed a large gap, with Ben Spies nearly two thirds of a second behind on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha, while San Carlo Gresini's Marco Melandri had an outstanding afternoon, ending up 6th, just behind Spies.

Tim Richmond Documentary Airs Tuesday Night on ESPN
Filed under: NASCAR
In another of ESPN Film's Emmy-worthy installments of its documentary series "30 for 30," the network on Tuesday night gives us a moving and informative look at the life of former star NASCAR Cup Series driver Tim Richmond, who died in 1989 of complications from AID at the age of only 34.Using the right blend of classic race footage and emotional interviews, the hour-long film gives an in-depth look at NASCAR's original rebel, the driver who gave Dale Earnhardt fits on track and puzzled the "Good Ol' Boy" garage, which wasn't sure what to make of this glam-kid from the Midwest.
As his former team owner Rick Hendrick and contemporaries such as Darrell Waltrip tell it, Richmond had more talent than he could harness. And Richmond enjoyed every bit of his success -- perhaps to a fault. The film, with emotional interviews from Richmond's sister, lets you decide.
This is a must-see for the massive legions of new NASCAR fans who started tuning into the sport only in the last decade. And it's sure to be an emotional trip down memory lane for those who remember Richmond's spunk, talent and personality.
It's interesting and compelling television whether you're a NASCAR fan or not.
The show begins at 8 p.m. (ET) Tuesday.

Weather Disrupts Qualifying At Estoril - 125cc Postponed, Rest Of Schedule Uncertain
The weather at Estoril has taken a turn for the worse, with driving rain leaving standing water on the Portuguese circuit, and high winds making riding dangerous. The 125cc qualifying session was postponed before it started, followed by the postponement of the MotoGP session less than an hour later. Currently, Race Direction is due to issue a decision on cancellation of all qualifying this afternoon at 2:30pm. Given that the weather and winds do not look like abeying, the afternoon looks like being lost to the weather.
If qualifying is cancelled, then the grid will be set on the overall best time set in the three sessions so far, as happened in Sepang. For MotoGP, that would see the front two rows of the grid start in the order they finished in FP2, with Jorge Lorenzo on pole, with Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi beside him on the front row.

Report: Jeff Gordon's New Sponsorship Deal to Be Announced Wednesday
Filed under: Jeff Gordon, NASCAR Sponsors, Sprint Cup, NASCAR
The AARP Foundation and Jeff Gordon will team up in 2011, with the charity arm of the retired persons organization becoming the primary sponsor on Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet for most of the NASCAR Sprint Cup races to promote a major anti-hunger campaign, the Charlotte Observer reported Monday. The paper reported that the campaign will be coordinated by the foundation and will eventually involve other companies.
The new deal, however, doesn't mean that fans will no longer see Gordon's longtime primary sponsors, Dupont and Pepsi, on his No. 24 Chevrolet. Those two powerhouse companies are expected to sponsor the races that AARP Foundation doesn't cover, the Observer said.
More details of the sponsorship are expected to be announced at a Wednesday news conference.
Dupont is one of NASCAR's longest-running and most dedicated sponsors.
If Dupont steps away completely from some of the 2011 races, it will be the first time since the company began sponsoring Gordon beginning with his very first race at Atlanta at the end of 1992.

James Toseland Confirmed With Satellite BMW World Superbike Squad
With the 2010 season already over, the 2011 World Superbike grid is gradually starting to take shape, with most of the seats filled, despite a host of riders involved in WSBK's version of musical chairs. One name who appeared to have been left standing as the music started to wind down was double WSBK champion James Toseland. The British rider had returned to World Superbikes this season from MotoGP with the factory Sterilgarda Yamaha squad, but Toseland had not adapted fast enough to WSBK to retain his seat for next season, and was looking to be out of a job for 2011.

Denny Hamlin Gets Serious as Chase Crunch Arrives
Filed under: Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR
Making eye contact with reporters, speaking in a strong voice, gesturing for emphasis, Denny Hamlin all but declared the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship was his to lose in the hour after he won the final regular season race Sept. 11 at his home track in Richmond, Va.His body language seemed to challenge anyone to believe differently. And five races into the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, Hamlin is every bit on track to back up the words.
He felt he could win or contend on every single of the 10 Chase tracks and, in the past, it might have seemed more bravado than measured confidence from the NASCAR "young gun."
But this is a different Hamlin. The 2010 Hamlin model says the proper championship mindset has at last matched his considerable talent. And he is doing everything he needs to do to give four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson a real run for a fifth.
Johnson holds a 41-point edge over second place Hamlin entering Sunday's race at the half-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, where the Tums Fast Relief 500 is being billed as mano y mano -- a heavyweight fight of sorts between Hamlin and Johnson, who have combined to win every race there in the last four years.
"People would think so, I would think so,'' Hamlin said of comparing the race to a title fight. "I feel like if it is mano y mano, we've been in a lot of green-white-checkers where we've been on the front row together, so it should be interesting.''

Aragon World Superbike Test Day 1 Times
The World Superbike riders have been hard at work for the 2011 season, with a large group gathering at the Motorland Aragon circuit to test their new bikes for next season. Carlos Checa was the fastest of the bunch by over a second, the Althea Ducati rider due to set out for Estoril on Thursday.
Michel Fabrizio's switch to the Alstare Suzuki team has gone swimmingly so far, the former Xerox Ducati rider the 2nd fastest rider on track, ahead of a bevy of Aprilia's, led by 2010 World Superbike Champion Max Biaggi, though new convert Noriyuki Haga interposed himself between the two factory bikes of Haga and Leon Camier.
Work continues for the Kawasaki team on their brand new bike, with Tom Sykes and Katsuaki Fujiwara testing the 2011 version of the ZX-10R, with Sykes also running back-to-back comparisons with the 2010 bike. But the BMW pit has been busiest, with a host of experienced mechanics being brought in to work on the bike for next season. So far, it has not produced the results hoped for, as Troy Corser and new signing Leon Haslam were well down the timesheets.

Twins Angela and Amber Cope Make Historic NASCAR Start at Martinsville
Filed under: Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR
For the first time in NASCAR history, a set of twins competed together in a national division in the Camping World Truck Series race Saturday at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. For 27-year-old identical twins Amber and Angela Cope, the prime-time debut was a decade in the making.
Amber Cope, driving the No. 6 Dodge, finished 26th, three laps down, while Angela Cope was involved in two incidents within 18 laps of each other early in the race and finished 30th, six laps down. Series veteran Ron Hornaday won the race.
But the Cope twins are far more interested in the future opportunities their debut may create than in the history they made.
The nieces of 1990 Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope (shown at right with their uncle) hadn't competed in over a year before Saturday's race, the sagging economy having made it tough to find sponsorship to fund a two-car program.
So while the publicity and headlines can't hurt, the real goal for the Copes Saturday was the more modest: gain of seat time and turning heads.
"The twins are smart, attractive and have talent,'' Derrike Cope said. "And they understand that there is a learning process associated with being successful.
"The girls know this is do-or-die. They have to perform. They have to make it happen.
"Our hopes are that people will stand up and take notice. We're just trying to get in position so this can escalate, to get the opportunities in front of us.''

Two-Year Biaggi Deal With Aprilia Officially Confirmed - At Last
After a seemingly endless holdout, and countless rumors of an imminent signing, Aprilia have finally announced a new deal with 2010 World Superbike champion Max Biaggi. The deal had been long anticipated, and the announcement was expected to come at Aprilia's special championship celebration, which took place at Noale on Saturday, but was delayed until after the weekend so as not to get snowed under in a deluge of news from this weekend's MotoGP round at Phillip Island. And so the announcement finally came on Monday.
The deal sees Biaggi remain with Aprilia for the next two season, meaning that the Roman Emperor intends to be racing until he the age of 41. There had been some speculation that Biaggi had decided to retire, but the most important factor behind his decision to renew is the fact that Aprilia are keeping the team together, which is based around the team that helped the Roman to his four 250cc World Championships. If Biaggi wins the title again in 2011, it would make him the oldest World Superbike champion ever, taking that honor from Troy Bayliss.
