Valentino Rossi confident for Silverstone MotoGP

Valentino Rossi is confident Ducati?s factory GP11 will be a competitive package at next month?s British MotoGP race after the Italian made his debut at the Silverstone track yesterday (Tuesday).
Rossi missed last year?s Silverstone clash while he was recovering from the badly broken right leg he suffered after a vicious high-side during practice for his home race in Mugello.
But he got his first chance to gauge the long, technical and fast Northamptonshire circuit with a specially arranged two-hour session after the impressive new Silverstone Wing pits and paddock complex was unveiled.
Rossi completed most of his laps on a bog standard 1198 delivered by Ducati UK staff after an 1198 SP he was testing was struck by the curse of the mystery of the electrical fault just four laps into the test.
Rossi had to be ferried back to the pits in the back of a white transit van but after completing a series of laps of the Silverstone circuit, he reckons the GP11 should be challenging close to the front at the British MotoGP on June 12.
Current factory Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden came close to claiming a rostrum last year at Silverstone, only to lose out to fellow American Ben Spies on the final lap.
And Rossi, who scored his first Ducati podium last weekend in Le Mans, told MCN: “For me it will be tricky because you have a lot of changes of direction at high speed and this is where we suffer a bit. But for the rest I think the Desmosedici will be suitable for this track. Last year the result of the Ducati was not fantastic but Casey was fast and also Nicky at the end arrived fourth and close to the podium. So for me it can be a good track for our bike.”
Rossi was impressed with how technical and fast the Silverstone track is and he got chance to sample it from a different perspective late in the day when he was passenger in a Porsche GT2 RS driven by Red Bull F1 star and bike fan Mark Webber.
Rossi added: “It?s a very good track and a very hard track. I think it will be very technical because a lot of parts are so fast so the lines will be very important, but at the same time also two or three parts are very tight where it is difficult to find good grip on acceleration you have to stay on the edge of the tyre a lot for in the long corners when the speed is very fast. I like I and it’s very good.”

2011 MotoGP Catalunya Press Release Previews: Simoncelli Expresses His Regret At Pedrosa Crash

The period between the Le Mans and Catalunya Grand Prix appears to have had a salutary affect on Marco Simoncelli. In the San Carlo Gresini Honda press release preview of the MotoGP round at Barcelona, Simoncelli has expressed his regret at the crash at Le Mans, in which he and Dani Pedrosa collided and Pedrosa broke his collarbone, and for which he was given a ride-through penalty. Don't Cheek The Beak, Or Why Marco Simoncelli Has Been Called To Face Race Direction At Barcelona

I'm sure you're all familiar with the situation - after all, if you're reading a motorcycle racing website, the chances are good that you are no stranger to speed - you're out for a ride or a drive somewhere, and you get pulled over by the local constabulary. There are a number of responses to getting stopped by the long arm of the law: loudly protesting your innocence and shouting at the officer who stopped you; sullenly sitting on your bike and responding to all questions with little more than a Neanderthal grunt; or giving the good man or woman a welcoming smile, admitting your failings (whether you believe the charges to be just or not), claiming it to be totally out of character and promising never to let it happen again. And of the three possible responses, it is fairly obvious which one will receive the lightest sentence (and no, it's not the one where you tell the officer exactly what part of the male or female anatomy they most resemble).

Casey Stoner makes Honda 1000cc debut

Casey Stoner kicked off his preparations for the 2012 MotoGP world championship in Jerez yesterday (Tuesday) when he completed his first day of testing on board Honda?s new 1000cc machine.

Fresh from his emphatic victory in the French Grand Prix at Le Mans on Sunday, Stoner completed 50 laps on the new bike, which was given its shakedown test at the Suzuka circuit in Japan last month by Shinichi Ito and Kousuke Akiyoshi.

The Aussie declared his debut a success and said: “Everything has gone very well, very positive. It’s just nice to ride the 1000cc again, to feel the engine and the power. I had a lot of fun, I enjoyed it because everything we’ve tried seems to be working, so no complaints. We didn’t focus on anything special, just tried to understand what the bike is doing, how it reacts on the brakes and things like that, also considering some the issues we have with the 800cc right now.

“The braking point seems to be stronger, stability in the front going into the corner seems to be very good, and of course we want to understand how the power delivery is, and it is very smooth so no problem. In general, we haven’t changed too much from the set up we have on the 800cc right now and the feeling is very similar, so it’s pretty good.”

Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa was also scheduled to test the new 1000cc four-cylinder machine but was ruled out after breaking his right collarbone in a controversial incident with Marco Simoncelli in Le Mans.

And Stoner said his absence was a big blow for Honda with the Spaniard?s input being vital for the development of the new project.

The 2007 world champion added: “The biggest disappointment is that Dani is not going be here to test as he is important to the development of this bike. I hope that soon HRC can get his input as well because we need as much data as possible, in order to be ready for next season.”

WSBK: Sunshine Blesses Race 1 at Miller Motorsports Park

After a rainy Saturday Superpole, the sun blessed the Miller Motorsports Park for World Superbike’s Race 1. Carlos Checa returned to the Utah track in dominant form, though problems early on in the weekend gave glimpses of last year’s mechanical snafus. With both the factory Yamahas and Liberty Ducatis looking very quick in Superpole and in the practice sessions, Checa’s dominance for this year remained to be seen, with the pre-race predictions being anyone’s guess.Having ...

Ducati developments face Le Mans test

After giving the green light to new chassis and engine updates at the post-race Estoril test, Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden will put some of the latest Desmosedici developments to a competitive test at this weekend’s French MotoGP at Le Mans.

Whilst the new chassis can be put to immediate use, MotoGP’s limit of six engines for a season means the team will have to wait until mileage on the present powerplants has been exhausted before running the revised engine.

?Nicky and Valentino were both pleased with the work we did during the post-race test at Estoril, and now the team will try to do everything it can to adapt to the GP11 to a circuit that’s very different from the one in Portugal,? said team manager Vittoriano Guareschi.

?Once again we’re hoping for a sunny weekend, since every hour of track time in ?normal? conditions is very important for us because of the work we’re doing.?

Historically, the stop-and-go circuit has proven to be a demanding track for Ducati, which has taken just two podiums since its 2003 MotoGP debut – with Loris Capirossi (second) in 2006 and Casey Stoner (third) in 2007.

However, Hayden was fourth last year and is hopeful his GP11 can make gains in the many braking zones.

?Traditionally, Le Mans hasn’t been a good track for me. I’ve never had a podium or a front row there, but I was fourth there last year, which was my best-ever result,? said Hayden. ?You can’t really make too much out of that, but we’ll try to take the information we collected during the test at Estoril and see if we can put it to good use in France.

?One good thing I look forward to is that I think the best strength of our bike right now is stability under hard braking, and Le Mans has a lot of hard braking. Traditionally, the grip there isn’t very good, so that’s something we’re probably really going to have to work on. We’ll go there and see what we’ve got.?

Hayden has taken Ducati’s only podium of this season with third in the wet at Jerez, while Rossi has finished fifth in the last two races.

The seven time MotoGP champion Rossi is a former three-time winner of the Le Mans MotoGP race – earning victories in 2002, 2005 and 2008, along with another four podiums.

Ducati Gearing Up for Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

There are a number of things this summer we’re pretty pumped about here at Asphalt & Rubber, two of which are are the upcoming Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the release of the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak Edition. Part Formula 1, part World Rally Championship, there’s something about a race course where one wrong move in a priceless no-limits vehicle can send you over the edge of a 3,000 foot cliff that ...
