For dedicated motorcycle racing fans, the months of December and January are the toughest of the year. Other than the occasional team launch and the odd private test - which are often rather secretive affairs - very little stirs in the world of motorcycle racing, and the events which are taking place are no substitute for real motorcycles posting real times on real tracks. So fans are forced to grit their teeth and hang on, waiting for better times.
That wait is almost over. On Wednesday, January 26th, the 2011 pre-season kicks off - more or less - officially, when the first official World Superbike test starts at the spectacular Portimao circuit on Portugal's Algarve coast. All of the major World Superbike contenders will be present, with the exception of the factory BMW team of Leon Haslam and Troy Corser, who are currently on their way to Australia, where they will be taking part in a private test.

Event: 49th Rolex 24 At Daytona (Round 1 of 12)
Series: Daytona Prototype division of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series
Location: Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (3.56-mile, 12-turn road course)
Pole Winner: Jorg Bergmeister of Flying Lizard Motorsports (1:40.099 at 128.033 mph)
SunTrust Racing: Second by Max Angelelli (1:40.133 at 127.990 mph)
The No. 10 SunTrust Chevrolet Dallara of Wayne Taylor Racing will start this weekend?s 49th renewal of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona from the inside of the front row after qualifying Thursday afternoon at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
Italian driving ace Max Angelelli, who?s co-driving the SunTrust Racing prototype with regular full-time teammate Ricky Taylor, IZOD IndyCar Series star Ryan Briscoe and team owner Wayne Taylor, clocked a lap of 1 minute, 40.133 seconds (127.990 mph) around the 3.56-mile, 12-turn superspeedway road circuit, second-fastest among 50 car-and-driver combinations entered for this weekend?s 24-hour endurance classic. Angelelli, the polesitter in the SunTrust Racing machine at last year?s Rolex 24, was just 34-thousandths of a second off the record-setting pole time of fellow former series champion Jorg Bergmeister in the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche Riley today. Nonetheless, Angelelli qualified the SunTrust car on the front row for the fifth time in eight Rolex 24s since SunTrust joined the series in 2004.

Below is the "provisional" MotoGP entry list issued by the FIM. Given the cost and complexity of a MotoGP entry, it should be regarded as anything but provisional, as all of the names are confirmed, and no new entries are expected, despite rumors that other manufacturers may make a surprise return.

The weather conditions were once again the main protagonist on the final day of testing for the World Superbike class at Portimao, with few riders managing to improve their times from the morning session. Only Noriyuki Haga and Eugene Laverty made any significant progress, moving up into 3rd and 4th respectively in the combined times from both of Friday's sessions.
The World Superbike riders now turn their sights towards Australia, and the opening round of the WSBK season at Phillip Island. Before that, though, there is a final test at the Australian track, to prepare for battle to commence in earnest.
