Suzuki Recalls 70,000+ Motorcycles for Faulty Rectifier

If you’ve bought a Suzuki motorcycle in the past few years, you might want to check out the list for the Japanese company’s latest motorcycle recall. Affecting 73,426 motorcycles from various product lines and model years (2008-2010), Suzuki has discovered a faulty electrical rectifier/regulator in its design that needs replacing. According to the recall, rectifiers/regulators on bikes built between July 2007 and September 2009 have an inadequate amount of adhesion between the power module and ...

2012 Daytona 500 Will Run Feb. 26

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Next year's 54th annual Daytona 500 will be run on Feb. 26, a week later than usual, Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III announced here Sunday.

The move shortens the NASCAR Sprint Cup season by one week, but also eliminates the March off weekend, one of the rare off weekends in Sprint Cup racing during the February-to-November season.

It also adds a bit of a cushion in case the Super Bowl is pushed back another weekend.

Chitwood said eliminating the March off weekend will have a positive effect because "many fans and media partners have said (it) created a drop in momentum in the early part of the racing season."

Blake's Takes: The Dark Spectre in Racing

There's an Iggy Pop song called "Gimme Danger." The tune is haunting, although the words have almost nothing to do with what I'm about to discuss.

Those two words came to me every time I thought about what to write on a touchy subject, and I'll admit to some reservation in writing it at all.

Arguing with aggrieved NASCAR fans is like trying to explain something to your ex-wife -- you cant win.

Another quote brings it closer to home. Former world champion Jackie Stewart recalled a pre-season drivers meeting in the 1970s and looking around and wondering, en brogue, "which of these men I wouldn't see at next year's meeting."

Yes, friends, the possibility of death on the track loomed large then, and before, not just in Grand Prix racing but in midget and sprint-car shows in the Tommy Hinnerschitz days. The Nurburgring, that 16-mile monstrosity through the German forests, was billed as the world's most lethal track. Anyone remember Langhorne Speedway, outside Philadelphia? Bill Vuckovich? Eddie Sachs?

The now-gone Indianapolis News annually published the "official" record book of the 500-Mile Race. On a full page in the back was "Died at the Speedway", a list that included not only drivers and crewmen but spectators and innocent bystanders.

Superbike World Championship 2011 - Phillip Island

Super bike World Championships Phillip Island
The SBK World Championships – Season 2008!
GP Philip Island, Australia
Superpole :: SBK 2011
Phillip Island, Australia

Event Introduction
Superbike racing is all about showcasing the latest generation of high-performance four-stroke street bikes, with seven manufacturers set to battle it out for the 2011 world championship – Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati, BMW and Aprilia.

WATCH NOW

Much more than prototype-based grand prix racing, superbikes have a greater connection to the general public, because people can see the bikes they own being punted around on some of the finest race tracks in the world, including Australia’s very own Phillip Island.

The spectacular Phillip Island has one of the highest average speeds of any circuit in the world, and in the 2010 round Italian Max Biaggi (the eventual world champion) reached 319.8km/h down the main straight on his Aprilia V-four. That’s seriously potent performance.

WATCH NOW

The championship regulations allow four-cylinder bikes of up to 1000cc, or twins up to 1200cc. At the moment, Ducati is the only marque which is using a twin-cylinder configuration.

In 2011, the minimum weight for both twin-cylinder and four-cylinder bikes will be 165kg.

A superbike must remain in many aspects the same as the bike that can be bought in any dealership, including the body design. To be allowed to enter the world superbike title every manufacturer must produce a minimum quantity of a bike that must also be commercially available to the general public.

The championship also has a control slick race tyre, produced by Pirelli, giving all teams access to the same specification rubber to create closer and more exciting racing than ever before.

WSBK: One Man Show for Race 1 at Phillip Island

Carlos Checa started the season-opening round of World Superbike racing at Phillip Island on pole, having dominated testing and the weekend. Reigning champion Max Biaggi started alongside him, finally bearing his #1 championship plate, having posted a qualifying time just .013s slower than Checa’s. Completing the front row were Sylvain Guintoli and Leon Haslam, both quick in the dry times from Saturday’s qualifying. Conditions on Sunday led to some shake-ups in the order for the ...

World Superbike Riders Forming Safety Commission

World Superbike riders have begun establishing a safety commission to have a stronger voice in providing safer conditions for racers in the series. Though other top-tier racing series have long had a body specifically to promote the safety of riders and drivers, it seems that the timing of the race at Donington Park this season has moved the riders to join forces. They met first during the official test in Portimao a month ago and ...

It's Tony Stewart Again at Daytona in Nationwide Photo Finish

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The venerable Daytona International Speedway may as well be classified a completely new venue for the Nationwide Series this season.

The victory lane celebration, however, remains much the same.

Tony Stewart pushed by Clint Bowyer in the final feet of Saturday's DRIVE4COPD 300 to win his sixth checkered flag of the season-opener in his last seven tries. The winning margin of .007 seconds was the third closest in series history.

"We just got a great run," Stewart said. "We had a good push from Landon Cassill there at the line."

Cassill, a young driver without a full-time ride this season, finished third to take the Nationwide Series' points lead.

The path to success again for Stewart had plenty of reasons to derail this time around.
